Modi becomes India's longest-serving head of elected government at 8,931 days
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has etched his name in history as India's longest-serving head of an elected government, surpassing Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling's 8,930-day record.
Modi hit 8,931 days on Sunday, blending his Gujarat Chief Minister tenure with his time as Prime Minister—marking 25 years in top leadership.
This feat highlights his uninterrupted public service, including stints as Gujarat's longest-serving CM (October 7, 2001, to May 21, 2014) and the PM with the most prior CM experience.
Born post-Independence, Modi stands as the first such PM. He won full Lok Sabha majorities in 2014, 2019, and 2024—the first non-Congress leader to secure three straight terms, with two full ones completed.
This year, Modi also dominated digital metrics: his YouTube channel topped 30 million subscribers, outpacing all serving and former global leaders. He hit 100 million Instagram followers in February (now 101 million)—a first for any world leader—and boasts 106.4 million on X.
