Meerut Police to issue 'red card' notices to 100 troublemakers ahead of Eid
text_fieldsMeerut: Ahead of Eid, the Meerut Police have identified around 100 individuals considered potential law-and-order risks and plan to issue them “red card” notices, officials said on Saturday.
According to police, cases have previously been registered against these individuals for causing disturbances or creating tense situations during festivals. A red card notice is a preventive tool designed to identify, track, and deter troublemakers.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Avinash Pandey told PTI that to ensure a peaceful Eid, the administration has coordinated with Islamic clerics and mosque management committees. Discussions have been held with the management of the district’s 544 mosques and 146 Eidgahs, all of whom have assured that prayers will not be conducted on roads under any circumstances.
Pandey also refuted reports quoting him as saying that passports of those offering prayers on roads would be revoked, clarifying that no such directive has been issued. However, he added that strict action will be taken against anyone violating the law.
Superintendent of Police (City) Ayush Vikram Singh said police reviewed records from the past five years of individuals involved in creating disputes or tense situations during festivals. The red card notices will be issued to around 100 such people, who may belong to any religious background.
The notices will serve as a warning that any attempt to disrupt the atmosphere during or around Eid will result in a case being registered and strict action taken. In serious cases, measures may also be initiated under the National Security Act (NSA).
Police noted that during last year’s Eid, a scuffle occurred with law enforcement following the breaking of barricades and prayers offered on roads in the Railway Road police station area. Complaints were registered against about 55 individuals, some of whom are likely to receive the new red card notices.
