The Working Committee of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH), led by its president Maulana Mahmood Madani on August 21 adopted strong resolutions condemning both the large-scale displacement of families in Assam and the ongoing violence in Palestine.

During a meeting on Wednesday evening, attended virtually by members and invitees from across the country, the Committee voiced serious concern over recent eviction drives in Assam. According to the organisation, these operations have rendered over 50,000 families homeless.

In a strongly worded resolution, the JUH urged India’s constitutional authorities—including the President and the Chief Justice of India—to immediately remove Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from office and initiate criminal proceedings against him under hate speech provisions, Maktoob Media reported.

The organisation pointed to Sarma’s recent statement, “We are only evicting Miya Muslims,” calling it clear evidence of communal bias. It further highlighted that every displaced family so far belonged to the Muslim community, which, according to the JUH, exposed the discriminatory nature of the eviction campaign.

The Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind (JUH), in its resolution, stated that although the organisation has consistently opposed illegal encroachments on government land, the current eviction drives in Assam are being conducted in a manner it described as inhumane, unconstitutional, and discriminatory, driven by prejudice and divisive rhetoric.

The Committee called for immediate rehabilitation and alternative housing for the displaced families. It also demanded that impartial surveys be conducted before any eviction takes place and urged public officials to refrain from making inflammatory or communal statements.

Turning to international issues, the JUH expressed deep distress over the situation in Palestine, condemning what it referred to as genocide in Gaza. The Committee criticised the killing of nearly 100,000 civilians, the use of starvation as a weapon of war, and the annexation of Gaza under Israel’s “Greater Israel” agenda.

Labelling the blockade and denial of humanitarian aid as “the worst form of terrorism,” the JUH urged the global community and Arab nations to unite against Israeli aggression, establish humanitarian corridors, and work towards securing an immediate ceasefire.

The Committee further warned that the continued silence and inaction of global powers serve only to encourage further atrocities.

In addition, the JUH approved a framework for establishing its Electoral Board, which will supervise the organisation’s upcoming internal elections once the membership drives are completed.
