Manipur protests intensify after killing of two children in Bishnupur
text_fieldsFresh protests and clashes broke out across Manipur’s Valley region on Friday night following the killing of two children in an attack in Tronglaobi village.
Large crowds gathered in Imphal East, including at Khurai Lamlong Bazar, defying curfew to stage demonstrations.
Security forces used tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse protesters as tensions escalated, leaving several people injured. The injured were taken to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment.
The unrest follows an April 7 attack in Moirang Tronglaobi village in Bishnupur district, where suspected militants from hill areas dominated by Kuki-Zo groups allegedly fired a projectile at a civilian house. The explosion killed two children and caused significant damage to the residence, triggering panic in the region.
Anger has been building across the Valley since the incident, with civil society groups calling for continued protests. The case has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency for further probe.
Authorities have eased curfew restrictions in parts of the Valley to allow limited movement. In Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching, restrictions have been relaxed from 5 am to 5 pm, while in Bishnupur, movement is allowed only between 5 am and 10 am.
Despite the relaxations, normal life remains disrupted. Protesters have blocked key roads in Bishnupur and parts of Imphal East, including Kongba Bazar, Wangkhei, and Kongpal, forcing vehicles to turn back.
Schools remain closed, and mobile internet services continue to be suspended across Valley districts. The situation remains tense, with protests and confrontations being reported daily in the affected areas.
Tronglaobi village lies near the boundary with Churachandpur district and has long been considered vulnerable due to its proximity to hill areas where armed groups are reportedly active.
