Management students must ‘walk the talk,’ says Dr. Raju Narayana Swamy
text_fieldsDr. Raju Narayana Swamy, IAS — widely known as Kerala’s anti-corruption crusader — urged management students to align words with action while addressing a gathering at Manipal.
Speaking on the theme “Leadership Through Courage and Integrity,” Dr. Swamy emphasised that true leadership goes beyond authority and titles.
Quoting the well-known dictum, “Management is about arranging and telling, whereas leadership is about nurturing and enhancing,” he reminded students that ethical leadership is built on values, not position.
According to him, management students must develop a wide range of competencies to succeed in today’s complex professional landscape. These include unstructured problem-solving, curiosity-driven self-learning, teamwork, strong social and communication skills, leadership without authority, grit, time management, hard work, and creativity.
In a subsequent lecture delivered to students of Business Analytics, Dr. Swamy shifted focus to cyber security in the age of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data.
He outlined both the opportunities and risks posed by emerging technologies, stressing that rapid digital advancement has significantly increased vulnerability to cyber threats.
He explained common cyber threats such as data diddling, salami slicing, and denial-of-service attacks, supporting his points with updated real-world examples. Dr. Swamy cautioned that even advanced technologies like cloud computing demand rigorous security frameworks. He also highlighted the growing impact of web servers and Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) on cyber security systems.
The audience was particularly engaged by real-life instances demonstrating how social networking platforms have increasingly become tools for hacking and unauthorised access to private information.
Dr. Swamy provided an in-depth overview of security technologies, ranging from data authentication to access control mechanisms.
Concluding his lecture, Dr. Swamy observed that cyber security is not merely a technological concern. “It is a comprehensive framework of processes, structures, and practices,” he said, aimed at the ultimate goal of protecting networks, programs, and data from damage and unauthorised access.
The event was presided over by Dr. Sandeep Shenoy, Director, Manipal Institute of Commerce and Economics.
