Police in Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka, on Wednesday arrested a 24-year-old labourer, identified as Bhavith, for allegedly assaulting and stripping a 25-year-old schoolteacher while she was returning home from work.

The victim, who sustained multiple injuries, has been admitted to a government hospital in Shivamogga, where doctors said her condition is stable.

According to officials, the attack occurred on Tuesday evening in the jurisdiction of Jayapura police station in Koppa taluk. The woman, employed on a contract basis at a government school, was walking home around 5 p.m. when the accused allegedly intercepted and assaulted her, Indian Express reported.

Villagers rushed to the spot after hearing her cries for help, but by the time they arrived, the attacker had fled after reportedly stuffing mud into her mouth. A case was soon registered at the local police station.

Investigators said the accused, a resident of Balur village near the victim’s home, was known to her. Police sources indicated that he had previously proposed to the woman, but she had rejected his advances. Despite her refusal, he allegedly continued to harass her, and in anger over the repeated rejection, carried out the attack.

The woman’s brother, who reached the hospital soon after the incident, confirmed that she suffered head injuries. Police officials said she is recovering and remains under medical supervision. The accused is currently in custody and will be produced before a court, while further investigation is underway.
