Keonjhar/Odisha: In a shocking and heartbreaking incident from Odisha, a man was forced to carry the skeleton of his dead sister to a bank after he was not allowed to withdraw money from her account.

The incident happened in Keonjhar district. Jitu Munda, who lives in Dyanali village, walked nearly three kilometres in extreme heat with his sister’s remains to reach an Odisha Grameen Bank branch in Mallipasi. His sister, Kakra Munda, had died about two months ago. Her husband and son had already passed away earlier, leaving Jitu as the only surviving family member.

Jitu had earlier gone to the bank to withdraw ₹19,300 from his sister’s account, which he needed for expenses. But bank officials refused to give the money, saying the account holder must be present or proper legal documents must be submitted. Jitu, who is illiterate, could not understand or arrange these documents and had to return helplessly.

With no other option, he went to the cremation ground, dug up his sister’s remains, wrapped them in a white cloth and carried them on his shoulder to the bank under the hot sun.

People at the bank were shocked to see this. Some were moved to tears, while others got angry and protested against the bank officials.

Police soon reached the spot, calmed Jitu down and took away the remains. They said the issue would be looked into with a humane approach and that they would seek an explanation from the bank.

The incident has raised serious concerns about how strict rules can sometimes ignore basic human situations.
