Bengal Elections: Mamata declares candidature from Nandigram

Nandigram: Nandigram is better known for the farmers' protests and subsequently the current chief minister Mamata Banerjee's win by a landslide and her party TMC's alliance victory to power in the 2011 election year via the very same election mainly on the back of her campaign for farmer's land, and thus putting an end to the 3-decade plus reign of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led alliance.

Now the constituency is coming to news again when the outspoken chief minister announcing that she will contest the assembly election due in May this year. But this time around, the significance of the contest has nothing to do with farmer stir, but the fact that the sitting member is Suvendu Adhikari, who defected to the BJP last month, and who as the TMC candidate also had engineered TMC's, and Mamata's, crucial Nandigram phase of West Bengal's political twists.

The contest has now become official with Mamata announcing it at a public meeting in Nandigram : "I will contest from Nandigram. Nandigram is my lucky place." However, she also stated that it will be her second constituency, the other being Bhabanipur in Kolkata.

Addressing the public meeting of her party, she exuded confidence about winning the election, and said she was not worried about those who jumped over to the other side. She recalled that there wee not many when she first won the majority.
