Live-in relationships also must be registered: Uttarakhand HC
text_fieldsDehradun: The Uttarakhand High Court ruled on Thursday that live-in relationships also must be registered under the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Uttarakhand 2024. The court ruled so while granting protection to a couple of interreligious faiths, Live Law reported.
The court observed that the people in such relationships must register before a Registrar within one month of relationship and if they did not it will invite jail term or fine or both. The court cited Section 378 of the 2024 Law UCC of Uttarakhand.
The court bench of Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari and Justice Pankaj Purohit was hearing a plea by a 26-year-old Hindu girl and her 21-year-old Muslim live-in partner seeking protection. The couple complained that since they are in a live-in relationship, the girl’s parents and brother are extending threats.
The state government told the court that under the provisions of UCC Uttarakhand of 2024, live-in relationship partners must register the same; the couple, in this case, has not complied with the same so far.
The petitioners told the court in reply that they would furnish the same in no time under the relevant provisions of UCC Uttarakhand, 2024.
Later, the court noted the petitioners complaint of threat to their life and liberty and directed the SHO to provide them with adequate for six weeks, citing the law declared by Supreme Court in Lata Singh v State of UP & Anr. The court directed the couple to apply for registration of their relationship within 48 hours before disposing of the matter.
