Kolkata woman beheaded, chopped into pieces for rejecting brother-in-law

Kolkata: A woman in her 30s was brutally murdered by her brother-in-law in Kolkata’s posh Tollygunge area after rejecting his romantic advances. The accused, 35-year-old Atiur Rahman Laskar, a construction worker, strangled her, beheaded her, dismembered her body into three parts, and discarded the remains in different locations.

The discovery of the woman’s severed head on Friday morning in the Regent Park area shocked locals, who found it concealed in a polythene bag and immediately informed the police. The torso and lower body of the victim were found the following day, near a pond in the area.

Laskar, who had been repeatedly rejected by the victim, a domestic helper, confessed to the murder. The woman, who had been separated from her husband for two years, had been commuting daily to work with Laskar, but she began avoiding him and even blocked his phone number. This rejection led to Laskar's anger, and on Thursday evening, after she finished her work, he forced her to accompany him to an under-construction building. There, he strangled her, beheaded her, and cut her body into three parts, which he later disposed of in a garbage vat and near a pond.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Bidisha Kalita confirmed that sniffer dogs were deployed to track the suspect, and nearby CCTV footage was reviewed. The police also conducted an initial examination of the severed head, which had injury marks and bloodstains, indicating that the crime had occurred within 12 hours of its discovery. Samples from the garbage vat on Graham Road, where the head was initially found, were also collected for analysis.

Based on evidence and footage, the police traced Laskar to his native village of Basuldanga in Diamond Harbour, South 24 Parganas district, where he was arrested.
