Karnataka mooting a Uniform Civil Code: CM Bommai

Bengaluru: Speaking at a programme organised as part of the Constitution Day, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Saturday that the state government was studying different aspects of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), The Indian Express reported.

Talking to reporters, he said that the BJP feels that the UCC is desirable, and it has been part of the party's manifesto at the national level for a long. Committees have been formed by various state governments to implement it, and the Karnataka government is also studying various aspects of it, he said, adding that they would take a call after.

On Friday, the CM told his party workers at Shivamogga that the government is thinking about implementing a UCC for the sake of equality. He stated that the Preamble of the Constitution enshrines equality and fraternity.

He said that they have been talking about the UCC since the time of Deendayal Upadhyay, and now a serious thought on the same is going on in the country at the national and state levels. It is intended to be implemented when the right time arrives, and the state government will take necessary steps towards that, he said.

"We not only explore things that we believe can make people's welfare possible and bring equality but also take strong measures to implement them," TIE quoted Bommai.

Further, the CM defended Karnataka's new anti-conversion law saying that the Supreme Court had declared forced conversion a crime.-
