Kanpur man slits throats of twin daughters, surrenders to police
text_fieldsA man in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur has been arrested for allegedly murdering his 11-year-old twin daughters by slitting their throats at the family home in the early hours of Sunday. The father himself alerted the police after the double killing, prompting a swift investigation.
The victims' mother, Reshma Chhetri, levelled grave accusations against her husband, describing him as an alcoholic who routinely tortured her through beatings and food deprivation. The couple, who had a love marriage in 2014, saw their relationship deteriorate soon after. Reshma alleged that her husband installed CCTV cameras throughout the house, including his bedroom, and subjected her to violence whenever she tried to visit her parents.
Forced to flee with their son nine months ago—leaving the twins behind as her husband refused to release them—Reshma returned home on Sunday, unable to bear separation from her daughters. She recounted that the family had shared a normal dinner the previous night, after which her husband took the girls to his room. Monitoring the CCTV feed, she saw him talking on the phone late into the night, then taking one daughter to the bathroom around 2.30am before switching off the lights. No unusual sounds followed, and she assumed they were asleep, unaware of the tragedy unfolding.
Police rushed to the scene upon the father's call, discovering the girls' bodies with deep neck wounds inside the house. A forensic team collected evidence, and both bodies were sent for post-mortem. The accused remains in custody for interrogation as officers probe the motive. Reshma noted her husband's frequent threats to kill himself and the twins.
Senior police official Deependra Nath Chaudhary confirmed a thorough probe is underway, with the accused to appear in court soon. Law and order in the area remains stable.
