Yusuf Pathan, the former cricketer-turned-politician, has clinched a significant victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, defeating five-time MP and seasoned Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from Baharampur in West Bengal.
The former all-rounder, representing the Trinamool Congress (TMC), secured 5,24,516 votes, surpassing Chowdhury by a margin of 85,022 votes. This victory marks a triumphant political debut for Pathan, who is well-known for his crucial role in India’s 2007 World T20 win.

Pathan's victory is particularly noteworthy given the labels and scepticism he faced during the campaign. His rivals branded him an "outsider" due to his Baroda roots, but he managed to connect deeply with Baharampur’s 52% Muslim electorate. His popularity from his time with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League also played a role in endearing him to the local population, according to The Indian Express.
Pathan's political journey began with an unexpected call from the TMC four months prior to the election. After discussing the opportunity with his family, who were initially reluctant, Pathan decided to embrace the challenge.
Pathan’s victory is part of a broader success for the TMC, which also saw another former cricketer, Kirti Azad, win the Bardhaman–Durgapur seat. Azad, a 1983 World Cup winner and experienced politician, offered Pathan advice on the demands of political life. He emphasized the need for hard work and direct engagement with the electorate, encouraging Pathan to approach him for guidance.
