Sitapur: A reporter for a Hindi daily was shot dead on the Sitapur-Delhi National Highway on Saturday, police said.

Raghvendra Bajpai was on his motorcycle on the overbridge near the Hempur railway crossing, when bike-borne assailants attacked him, NDTV reported.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sitapur, Praveen Ranjan Singh said that ‘Three bullets struck him in the shoulder and chest. The assailants then fled the scene on their motorcycle’.

Police transported the 35-year-old with the help of the local residents, to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Bajpai, according to his family, had received threatening phone calls recently.

ASP Praveen Ranjan Singh said that ‘Evidence collection has commenced and the district borders have been sealed to apprehend the perpetrators. Call details and other legal proceedings are underway.’
