Srinagar: Since the Election Commission of India extended the deadline for revising electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir, assembly polls in the region might not happen this year, NDTV reported.

The new deadline set by the EC is November 25, which is close to the start of winter and holding the polls after that would not be practical. Earlier the last date was in October.

Since June 2018, Jammu and Kashmir have been staying without an elected government. This was after BJP withdrew its alliance from Mehbooba Mufti's government and the coalition collapsed.

After that, elections got delayed under the Union government's rule. Later, Article 370 was revoked, and the state was downgraded and bifurcated into two Union Territories.

Though the new UT was granted an assembly, a redrawing of constituencies was required. The process, termed delimitation, was completed in a year, in May, after extending the tenure twice.

The revision of electoral rolls started after that.

At the moment, the Lieutenant Governor holds the entire power in the UTs. NDTV reports that a decision might come after November 25.
