Jharkhand: Man dragged for kms by Mercedes, HC lawyer detained

Ranchi: In a shocking incident in Ranchi’s Doranda police station area on Tuesday, a young man was reportedly dragged for several kilometres by a luxury Mercedes car after he objected to the vehicle hitting a woman, officials said.
The accused driver has been identified as High Court advocate Manoj Tandon, who has been taken into custody by the police.
According to reports, the incident occurred near Rajendra Chowk in Doranda. The Mercedes allegedly first struck a woman, prompting a young man present at the scene to intervene. When he tried to stop the vehicle, the driver allegedly attempted to run him over. The youth became trapped on the car’s bonnet, and the driver continued to drive for several kilometres without stopping. Home Guard personnel deployed along the route attempted to intercept the vehicle, but the car did not halt.
It is further alleged that the lawyer later took the injured youth to his residence, where he was assaulted.
The police launched a swift operation after receiving information, chased the vehicle, and successfully rescued the young man. The injured individual was immediately sent for medical examination.
Following the incident, a large crowd gathered outside the Doranda police station demanding strict action against the accused advocate. The matter also reached the Jharkhand High Court, where the Bar Association informed the court that Tandon had been detained and sought protection for him from possible mob violence.
Hearing the matter, a bench headed by Chief Justice M.S. Sonak observed that no one is above the law and directed the police to act strictly in accordance with legal provisions. While declining to grant immediate relief, the court instructed the state’s Advocate General to coordinate with the police to ensure the lawyer’s safety.
Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and all aspects of the incident are being thoroughly examined.
