Indians work among the longest; paid amongst the least, globally: ILO
text_fieldsAccording to a report by the International Labor Organization (ILO), our country is the second-lowest paid country in Asia while being among the countries where workers have the longest working hours globally. In Asia, Bangladesh leads with the least paid workforce. India has the fifth-longest working hours in the world.
The countries above India in the list of working hours per week are Gambia, Mongolia, Maldives and Qatar. But a good percentage of people in these countries are from India. In India, a person's working hours per week are 48 hours or more. In China, it is 46 hours. It is 37 hours in the United States and 36 hours each in England and Israel.
According to the report, Indian workers receive the lowest wages in the world. According to the Global Wage Report 2021-21, only a few African countries are lagging behind India in this regard. At the same time, well-paid people in urban areas in the country work longer hours than those in rural areas. In rural and urban areas, men work longer hours than women.
