New Delhi: Security has been tightened along the India-Nepal border after violent protests in Nepal over the past two days prompted central agencies to warn of possible attempts by miscreants to incite unrest in adjoining Indian states.

According to officials, intelligence inputs indicated that anti-social elements could exploit the turmoil in Nepal to create disturbances and damage public property in border areas.

Following the alert, security forces across Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal have been placed on high vigilance. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), along with state police units, has intensified patrolling and checks along the porous frontier.

In Uttarakhand’s Champawat, which connects to Nepal’s Mahendranagar, security was strengthened after the Nepal Army imposed a curfew. In Pithoragarh’s Dharchula, locals expressed concern over relatives across the border, while security agencies stepped up surveillance.

In Bihar’s Madhubani, Superintendent of Police Yogendra Kumar said all border police stations had been put on high alert. “People who are crossing the border are being allowed to do so with all the checking. We are checking the identifications. Our efforts are that no anti-social elements cross the border,” he told IANS.

Similar measures have been implemented in Uttar Pradesh, where security has been reinforced across seven districts bordering Nepal, Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, Shravasti, Balrampur, Siddharthnagar and Maharajganj.

DGP Rajeev Krishna said the strategy involves round-the-clock patrolling and strict checks at entry points, with 73 checkpoints placed under heightened alert. In Lakhimpur Kheri, Senior Superintendent of Police Sankalp Sharma confirmed that joint patrolling with the BSF and other security forces was underway.

At the Gaurifanta border connecting Lakhimpur’s Pallia tehsil with Nepal’s Dhangarhi, officials reported that the situation remained tense but under control.

In West Bengal, the Panitanki border in Darjeeling district has also been placed on high alert, with round-the-clock monitoring in place.
