New Delhi: Indian Bank has come out rejecting the reports that claimed the bank had framed new guidelines which are discriminatory to women, particularly against pregnant women, who are said to be unwelcome to the bank.

The Bank in a statement denied that it has, in any means, changed its existing guidelines and the reports that are being spread are nothing but misinterpretation.

"In some sections of the media, it has been interpreted that the bank has framed new guidelines which are discriminatory against women. In this regard, we wish to inform that the bank has not made any changes to the existing guidelines," Indian Bank said in a statement.

The statement further said that no discriminatory stand has ever been taken against pregnant women, but there have been rules that a woman with less than 12 weeks pregnancy is considered fit for the job, and those who are with above 12 weeks pregnancy shall submit a medical certificate of a registered medical practitioner that the candidate is fit for the job.

Besides, in case any candidate is seeking an extension on account of pregnancy, the bank is considering the request favourably, Indian Bank said.

Some reports which appeared on media claimed that the women who are three months pregnant have been denied jobs despite they had been selected through due process.

Taking suo-moto cognizance of media reports regarding framing of new guidelines by Indian Bank for recruitment of staff, the Delhi Commission for Women issued notice to Indian Bank's Managing Director and CEO seeking reply on the matter latest by 23rd June 2022.

The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal alleged that such rules are anti-women and requested the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to intervene in the matter.
