Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh's killer gunned down in Pakistan's Lahore
text_fieldsLahore: Unidentified assailants in the Pakistani city of Lahore on Sunday gunned down an accused in the murder of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in a high security jail in the country in 2013, The Hindustan Times reported.
Amir Sarfaraz Tamba, a close associate of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed, was rushed to a hospital after he was attacked by bike-borne assailants in Lahore's Islampura area.
Tamba, who was in critical condition, later succumbed to his injuries six years after he and another accused Mudassar were acquitted by a Pakistani court due to ‘lack of evidence’ as the witnesses turned hostile.
Sarabjit Singh, hailing from Bhikhiwind in Punjab, was sentenced to death for his alleged role in bomb blasts in Pakistan's Punjab province in 1990.
India repeatedly denied the charges stating that Sigh mistakenly crossed over to Pakistan in an inebriated state.
Singh died of cardiac arrest on May 2, 2013 at Jinnah Hospital Lahore after being comatose for nearly week following the brutal attack carried out by fellow inmates with bricks and rods in high-security Kot Lakhpat Jail where he was lodged.
His sister Dalbir Kaur fought to end Sarabijit Singh’s two-decade long stint in Pakistan jail, insisting that her brother was innocent and strayed into the country by mistake.
Kaur , who passed away in June 26, 2022, had gone to Pakistan to see her brother.
