India records highest single day COVID spike of 3.14 lakh cases

NEW DELHI: With over 3.14 lakh fresh cases in the last 24 hours, India's single day COVID spike made a new record since the virus spread reported in the the country last year.
According to the Health Ministry's COVID dashboard, 314,835 new COVID cases and at least 2104 related deaths were reported in the country.
The total infection tally has topped 15.9 million while the active Covid-19 caseload stands at 2291428. The death toll from the deadly infection stands at 184,672.
The top five states that have recorded the biggest surge in COVID cases in the last 24 hours are Maharashtra with 67,468 cases, followed by Uttar Pradesh (33,106), Delhi (24,638), Karnataka (23,558) and Kerala (22,414).
Over 2 lakh infections are being recorded every day since April 15.
The Maharashtra government, meanwhile, announced fresh restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19 and has set new restrictions which will come into effect from 8 pm on Thursday and will remain in force until 7 am on May 1. Goa has also decided to impose a night curfew till April 30 to tackle the pandemic.
Meanwhile, phase six polling is underway in West Bengal amid this alarming surge.
In another news, twenty-four COVID-19 patients died in Maharashtra's Nashik on Wednesday after an oxygen tanker leaked outside a hospital, disrupting supply to patients for around 30 minutes.
The Centre has remarked that the second wave is yet to peak and experts are not sure when the cases will decline.
