Heavy rain causes waterlogging in Mumbai: Trains, buses restricted

Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert signalling heavy rains in parts of Mumbai, Thane and Palghar, reports Midday. Mumbai and Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) received heavy rainfall on Friday, causing waterlogging in several areas. The spots of chronic waterlogging, Dadar, Parel, Wadala, Sion, Malad, Santacruz, Dahisar experienced the same. Since Thursday night, Mumbai is receiving spells of moderate to intense rain.

KS Hosalikar, Climate Research and Services Pune tweeted that there is no change in rainfall intensity, and the current spell might move from intense to very intense for some time. He said in another tweet that satellite images indicate intense clouds over Mumbai suburbs.

Meanwhile, Central Railway PRO Shivaji M Sutar tweeted to inform that due to heavy rain and waterlogging on the slow line near Kurla-Vidyavihar, trains are running 20-25 minutes late. The traffic in the slow line between Kurla-Vidyavihar is diverted to the fast line. There is a 20-25 minutes delay in the Harbour line, but the Trans-Harbor line is running smoothly, he said in his tweet. Local trains are only running for personal health and essential services. The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) buses are being restricted or diverted.

While the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is on alert, the water levels of the Mithi river are being monitored. BMC informed that during the past 24 hours, till 8 am on Friday, the city received 64.45 mm rainfall. In Western suburbs received 127.16 mm and Eastern Suburbs 120.67 mm.

According to IMD, Colaba received 1055.6 while Santacruz received 1291.6 mm rainfall since June 1.
