New Delhi: Anjuman-e-Islam moved the Supreme Court against the Karnataka High Court order that upheld the Hubbali-Dharwad Municipality's decision permitting the installation of the Ganesha idol in the Eidghah maidan.

Following a midnight High Court ruling on Tuesday, a Hindu organisation that h was granted permission to hold the Ganesha festival on the ground installed a Ganesha idol at the ground.

Allowing the Hindu body to hold Ganesha Chaturthi celebrations, the High Court ruled that the Supreme Court order that banned the celebrations at the Idgah grounds in Bengaluru is different from the case on Hubballi's Idgah ground.

High Court said there was no title dispute in Hubbali-Dharwad, it was clear that the property belonged to Dharwad Municipality, and the petitioner had only a lease over the property who had permission for namaz only on certain specified days of the year.

The Hubballi's Idgah ground has traditionally been used by local Muslims on Ramzan and Bakrid for prayers. The land was acquired by the Hubbali Municipality in the early years of the 20th century.

In 1921, the Anjuman-e-Islam petitioned the municipality to allow Muslims to hold prayers in the maidan. The municipality accepted the representation, and the land was leased to the Anjuman for 999 years.
