New Delhi: As flood waters from Yamuna River rushed in, Delhi government on Thursday shut down educational institutions, and several government offices.

Several areas of the national capital got submerged in flood, turning thoroughfares into an extended expanse of the river.

Scenes of muddy water enveloping and turning streets into an ocean kept emerging in the media.

In order to avoid casualties from floods, the government shut down schools, colleges, even crematoriums, alongside closely monitoring the situation.

Water levels of Yamuna as of 6.am today stand at 208.46 metres, which is slightly lower than of 208.66 from last night.

The Central Water Commission has predicted that the water levels will fall to 208.30 metres by 1 pm today, according to NDTV.

Delhi authorities warned of cutting the supply of drinking water and power to some areas of Delhi.

PM Modi ,who is on a two-day visit to France, talked to Union Minister Amit Shah over phone seeking details of the flood situation in Delhi and other places.

Amit Shah has reportedly briefed PM Modi about the situation, informing him that the water levels in the Yamuna will recede in the next 24 hours.

The Delhi Disaster Management Authority will continue the closure of offices, schools and colleges until Sunday.

The city government has banned heavy goods vehicles, except movement of essential items, from entering the city.

Relief works are underway in Punjab and Haryana after incessant rains caused heavy inundations and flood-like situations.

Death toll from rain-related incidents has climbed to 16 in Haryana from 10 fatal incidents that had been previously reported, while Punjab reported 11 deaths.
