FIR against PDP’s Iltija Mufti for sharing late Geelani’s video on Urdu
text_fieldsIltija Mufti, a leader of the People's Democratic Party, has been booked by police a day after she shared an old video of late Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on social media.
According to sources, the Cyber Police Station in Srinagar registered an FIR under Sections 152, 196(1), and 353(1)(b), (c), and (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alleging that the content promoted separatist ideology and spread misleading information with the intent to incite unlawful activities affecting India’s sovereignty and integrity, Maktoob Media reported.
Police officials indicated that the case was filed based on what they described as credible inputs about the circulation of such material across digital platforms.
The action comes amid protests by the PDP against the government led by Omar Abdullah over the removal of Urdu as a mandatory qualification in revised recruitment rules for revenue posts. Iltija Mufti had recently led demonstrations and addressed the media, criticising the policy change.
In her post on X, she reportedly stated that although she did not agree with Geelani’s ideology, his comments on the importance of Urdu were worth watching.
There has been no immediate response from Iltija Mufti or the PDP regarding the FIR.
Iltija, the daughter of former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, had contested the 2024 Assembly elections from Bijbehara but lost to Basheer Veeri of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference.
