Farmers march towards Delhi, Police uses cannons to stop the march

Thousands of angry farmers have gathered at the Haryana border to march towards the national capital in protest against the Centre's new farm laws. On Wednesday, the farmers in BJP ruled Haryana had faced a tough time to proceed with their march to Delhi as the state government had ordered the police to put up barricades at its borders to stop the farmers.

The protest was against the three farm laws proclaimed by the Centre. The law was enacted by the Centre despite facing strong opposition from the farmer bodies. Farmers from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Kerala and Punjab have planned a march to Delhi both today and tomorrow.

The police in Haryana have deployed water cannons and tear gas shells to disperse the protesting farmers.

The angry farmers in tractors and on foot for protest - threw police barricades into a river this morning after tear gas and water cannons were used on them.

The police were also using drones to monitor the situation even as barricades have been put up and water cannons readied. The Haryana authorities also imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in several parts of the state to prevent protester's assembly. The state has closed its border with Congress-ruled Punjab on Thursday and Friday.

Citing the coronavirus outbreak, the Delhi government has refused to allow any rally in the city.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, however, took to Twitter and criticised the police for using water cannons on the protesters. "The farmers are protesting against all three laws by the Centre. Instead of taking this bill back, the farmers are being stopped from protesting peacefully. Water cannons are being used on them. Such kind of injustice on farmers is not fair. Peaceful protest is their constitutional right," he tweeted this morning.

Delhi's borders at Gurugram and Faridabad have been sealed and metro services have been affected.
