EC issues notice to Kharge over ‘terrorist’ remark on PM Modi
text_fieldsThe Election Commission of India has issued a show cause notice to Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge over his remarks referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “terrorist,” officials said on Wednesday.
The action follows a complaint by a Bharatiya Janata Party delegation, which included Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman, seeking strict action from the poll body.
The controversy began after Kharge, speaking to reporters in Chennai, criticised the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for its alliance with the BJP and used the term while referring to the Prime Minister. The BJP condemned the remark, calling it an insult to both the Prime Minister and the citizens of the country.
Kharge later clarified that his statement had been misinterpreted. He said he did not intend to label Modi a terrorist, but meant that the Prime Minister “terrorises” political opponents and institutions.
The Congress leader also accused the Prime Minister of violating the Model Code of Conduct and alleged that the Election Commission was acting in favour of the BJP, further intensifying the political dispute.
