Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has accused the BJP-led Union Government of attempting to impose Hindi after the entrance gate of the Trichy Railway Division office displayed the name Kartavya Dwar.

The controversy erupted in Tiruchirappalli after the Hindi name appeared at the entrance of the railway office.

Functionaries of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam blackened the Hindi nameboard in protest. Allies of the party, including the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Left parties, also condemned the move, calling it an act of Hindi imposition.

In a post on X, Stalin said the Union Government was crossing all limits in its attempts to impose Hindi. He described the naming of the entrance as a disgusting form of Hindi imposition and criticised what he called a formula of one language, three scripts. He alleged that Hindi names were being written even in Tamil and English scripts as part of a broader agenda.

Stalin also cited other examples, including the use of Bhavishya Nidhi Bhawan in EPFO offices, the renaming of IPC laws with Sanskrit terms, the rechristening of the Union Ministry of Water Resources as the Ministry of Jal Shakti, and changes to the MNREGA scheme’s name. He said Tamil Nadu would give a befitting reply to the Union Government.

The BJP rejected the charge.

State party chief K. Annamalai accused the DMK of raising a non-existent Hindi imposition issue to divert attention from law and order concerns, corruption, and other public grievances.

The BJP ally All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam adopted a different stance. Party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami urged the Centre to intervene and ensure that the Trichy Division Railway Office entrance is named appropriately in Tamil.
