Delhi power demand hits record high of 8.6 gigawatts amid extreme heat

Amidst soaring temperatures of up to 47 degrees Celsius, Delhi's electricity consumption has surged to an unprecedented peak of 8,647 MW, marking the highest demand ever recorded in the capital.
At precisely 3:22 PM today, Delhi's power usage hit this new high, reflecting a significant rise in electricity consumption. This follows a previous milestone on May 22, 2024, when the city's peak electricity demand first reached 8,000 MW. Since that date, Delhi has witnessed eight instances where power consumption surpassed this threshold.
The extreme heat has forced residents to rely heavily on air conditioners and cooling devices, resulting in frequent spikes in electricity usage.
The India Meteorological Department has issued heatwave warnings for "isolated pockets" in several states including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh-Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, predicting these conditions for June 19th.
Currently, Delhi is under a 'red' alert, with maximum temperatures anticipated to reach 45 degrees Celsius today. This severe weather has significantly contributed to the unprecedented electricity demand in the city.
