Delhi govt announces action against vehicle owners without valid pollution certificate

NEW DELHI: as a part of controlling pollution in the national capital, the Delhi government on Saturday demanded that vehicle owners obtain a valid Pollution Control Certificate (PUCC) to avoid punitive measures, including disqualification of a driving license for three months.

The Department of Transport said in a public announcement that challans will be issued for vehicles that have expired PUCC. The challan will be issued under section 190 (2) of the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, which provides for imprisonment for up to three months or a fine of up to Rs 10,000 or both for non-possession of a PUCC.

"They will also be disqualified to hold their licence for three months," it read. The notice states that all registered vehicle owners with vehicles older than one year from the date of registration should inspect their vehicles and obtain a valid PUCC to avoid fines, according to PTI.

Official ssaid that the Delhi government has decided to ban medium- and heavy-duty vehicles from entering the national capital from October to February as part of efforts to curb vehicle pollution.

However, this ban will not be extended to vehicles carrying raw vegetables, fruits, grains, milk and such essential commodities, they added.

On June 15, the Delhi government had written to its neighbouring states, including Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, urging them to allow only BS VI-compliant buses to enter the national capital from October 1 to help control air pollution in the city.
