Delhi to bar entry of non-BS-VI vehicles registered outside city from Nov 1
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Delhi government will prohibit the entry of all commercial goods vehicles registered outside the city that are not compliant with BS-VI emission standards starting November 1, following directions from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM).
The move aims to curb rising air pollution levels in the national capital, particularly ahead of the winter season. BS-VI compliant vehicles adhere to stricter emission norms, significantly reducing pollutants compared to older models.
According to a public notice issued by the Transport Department, BS-IV commercial goods vehicles will be allowed to enter Delhi only until October 31, 2026, as a transitional arrangement. However, there will be no restrictions on the entry of commercial goods vehicles registered in Delhi, BS-VI compliant diesel vehicles, or BS-IV diesel vehicles until the 2026 deadline. Vehicles running on CNG, LNG, or electricity will also be exempt from the curbs.
The notice clarified that restrictions under the various stages of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) on commercial goods vehicles will continue to apply whenever the corresponding stage is enforced.
The CAQM, in its meeting held on October 17, approved a comprehensive ban on the entry of polluting commercial vehicles into Delhi from November 1, citing worsening air quality in the city.
Transport associations expressed hope for further relaxation. Bhim Wadhawa of the All India Motor Transport Congress said transporters have a one-year period during which BS-IV compliant vehicles will continue to be allowed entry. Rajendra Kapoor of the All India Motor and Goods Transport Association said members would hold a meeting to decide the next steps.
“The Supreme Court had issued the original directions. If we wish to seek an extension for BS-IV vehicles beyond one year, we will need to approach the court. A meeting will be held next week to decide our course of action,” Kapoor added.
