Jalpaiguri: A Bangladeshi man was beaten to death at a border village in West Bengal. He was allegedly caught trying to steal cows from a house.

The deceased has been identified as Md Salam, a native of the Panchagarh district in the Rangpur division of northern Bangladesh.

The mob told the police that a gang of Bangladeshi men crossed over to India on Tuesday to steal cows from a house in Barua Para in Jalpaiguri district. All except one managed to cross back to Bangladesh when they were chased.

Nripen Roy, whose house and cattle were targeted by the gang, said cows were stolen from the village earlier as well.

One of the thieves could not escape the locals and fled to a tea garden. The mob waited for him through the night and caught him at daybreak. The police said the man was then allegedly lynched.

The police arrested three people in connection with the lynching. "Rajganj police station has been asked to probe the case," said Superintendent of Police Debarshi Dutta.
