New Delhi: The second COVID wave has created irreparable damages to society as at least 577 children lost their parents to the pandemic attack till date.

Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani cited reports from State and Union territories to point out that number mentioned of the orphaned children was a count of a time span nearly two months from April 1 till May 25.

Minister Irani also vowed the government's commitment in protecting every vulnerable child who lost their parents to the COVID.

Irani said the child victims of the COVID would be ensured that they would be getting all care and support. Most of the orphaned children are under the watch of the district authorities, she added. The counselling at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences will also be provided to those children who need emotional support.

"The Centre is in constant touch with states and districts about these children. There is no shortage of funds for their welfare. The women and child development ministry has held meetings with all stakeholders, including the UNICEF," a source said.
