Surat: A Surat sessions court on Thursday said that it would be decided on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's plea for a stay to his conviction in a criminal defamation case over his "Modi surname" remark on April 20, PTI Reported.

The additional sessions judge R P Mogera said so after hearing both sides.

It was on March 23 a metropolitan magistrate court in Surat convicted the Congress leader in a defamation case and sentenced him to two years. It was on a case based on his statement, "How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname", made during an election rally in 2019.

After the conviction, Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as a member of the Lok Sabha. He filed an appeal before the court against its verdict and pleaded for a stay on the conviction till the court decided on his appeal.
