Ahmedabad: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will have to abstain from the Lok Sabha after a session court in Gujarat rejected his request to stay his conviction in connection with the "Modi surname" remark.

After being sentenced to two years in jail by a metropolitan magistrate court in Surat in a case filed by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi, Rahul Gandhi claimed that the trial court had treated him unfairly due to his status as an MP.

However, the Congress leader was disqualified from his MP position the next day.

Jairam Ramesh, a party leader, announced that they would explore all the legal options that are still available to them, shortly after the incident.
