Ranchi: A four-day-old child reportedly died after being crushed under police boots during a raid at a home in the early hours of Wednesday in Jharkhand's Giridih district, prompting Chief Minister Hemant Soren to initiate an investigation.

Soren tagged a video of a person describing the incident, and tweeted, “Jharkhand Police, please investigate the matter and inform”.

The alleged incident took place in a village under the jurisdiction of the Deori police station when police officers went to the home to make two arrests, among them the infant's grandfather Bhushan Pandey, in relation to an assault case. “It has been alleged that a four-day-old boy died when the police went there to execute two non-bailable warrants issued by a court. Prima facie, external injuries have not been found on the baby’s body. It has been sent for postmortem examination,” Giridih SP Amit Renu said, Indian Express reported.

According to the SP, the police will be able to explain what occurred once the postmortem report is received.

Babulal Marandi, a BJP leader and former chief minister, called the event "heinous" and demanded that top officials be held accountable.

In the Jharkhand Assembly, CPI-ML MLA Vinod Kumar Singh brought up the matter and demanded an investigation.
