New Delhi: The BJP hit back at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's accusations against the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, asserting that democracy functions according to the Constitution, not the whims of the Trinamool Congress chief.

On Tuesday, Banerjee claimed the ECI unilaterally deleted nearly 58 lakh names from draft rolls, targeting women voters who changed surnames or addresses post-marriage. She called it the ECI's "biggest blunder" to favor the BJP, alleging similar tactics in Maharashtra, Haryana, and Bihar left voters without recourse after election dates were announced.

BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi described Banerjee as being in "complete despair," likening her rule to a "blood-stained" regime whose end is imminent. MP Shashank Mani Tripathi accused the opposition of conspiring against SIR, noting its smooth implementation in Uttar Pradesh where all parties are satisfied. "Democracy won't run per Mamata Banerjee's directions but as per ECI and Constitution," he emphasized, also calling for probes into her actions during recent ED raids.

UP Minister Anil Rajbhar dismissed opposition criticism, saying the public ignores such rhetoric. He praised SIR for removing infiltrators, adding that Banerjee's reaction reveals its national benefit.

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions over voter list accuracy ahead of elections.
