The BJP’s central leadership has reaffirmed its support for Kerala state president K Surendran following the party’s significant loss in the Palakkad Assembly bypoll.

Dispelling rumors of Surendran’s resignation, BJP's Kerala in-charge Prakash Javadekar dismissed the speculation as "rumors" propagated by the CPI(M)-led LDF and Congress-led UDF. “No resignations have been offered or requested,” Javadekar clarified.

The BJP faced a substantial setback as Youth Congress state president Rahul Mamkootathil clinched the Palakkad seat with a commanding margin of over 18,000 votes. This win marked a historic gain for Congress, even in areas traditionally seen as BJP strongholds. Meanwhile, the CPI(M)-backed candidate improved their standing, further eroding BJP’s voter base.

Final results showed Congress’ Mamkootathil securing 58,389 votes (42.27%), followed by BJP’s C Krishnakumar with 39,549 votes (28.63%), and CPI(M) candidate P Sarin trailing at 37,293 votes (27%).

The loss has reportedly caused friction within the Kerala BJP. Internal critics have accused Surendran of imposing his choice of candidate, sidelining calls to field firebrand leader Sobha Surendran. Adding to the party’s woes, popular BJP spokesperson Sandeep G Varier resigned and joined Congress shortly before the election, fueling speculation about internal discord.

K Surendran attributed the defeat to historical trends, noting that the BJP often struggles in Kerala bypolls. He highlighted the unique support received in the 2021 elections for “Metro Man” E Sreedharan, which boosted the party’s performance at the time. Despite the setback, Prakash Javadekar expressed optimism, emphasizing the BJP’s growing base in Kerala, with 15 lakh new members joining through its latest drive. He voiced confidence in the party’s prospects for the 2026 Assembly elections.

In addition to Palakkad, bypolls were held in Chelakkara and the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency. Chelakkara remained a stronghold for the CPI(M)-led LDF, while Congress’ Priyanka Gandhi Vadra secured victory in Wayanad. The BJP finished third in both contests.
