Bengaluru: Mysuru police denied BJP permission to hold a protest and issued prohibitory orders in the city after various organizations planned similar demonstrations over the incident of stone-pelting at the Udayagiri Police station earlier this month, reports The Indian Express.

Following this, the BJP approached a court over the police’s refusal of permission. A party office-bearer said that BJP Karnataka president B Y Vijayendra, Leader of Opposition R Ashoka, and other senior leaders are expected to participate in the rally.

Citing that meetings, rallies, protests, etc., linked to the February 10 violence at the Udayagiri Police station could disrupt public peace, communal harmony and law and order, Mysuru Police Commissioner Seema Latkar announced the restrictions on the same. They have imposed the restrictions to prevent potential clashes and maintain stability in the city, police informed.

Police issued the prohibitory orders after Rashtra Suraksha Janandolana Samiti Mysuru called for a ‘Mysuru Chalo’ rally from JSS Vidyapeeth Gunhouse to Kote Anjaneyaswamy Temple, condemning the stone-pelting at the police station. To counter this, the Dalit Mahasabha and Mysuru District Youth Congress Committee have planned an event alleging that the BJP is trying to depict the Muslim community negatively over the violence.

Tensions arose in Mysuru on February 11 after a derogatory post on social media, reportedly written in Arabic, against Aam Admi Party's (AAP's) national convener Arvind Kejriwal, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav went viral. The post contained derogatory remarks against the political leader of a particular community and was allegedly made to hurt religious sentiments, India Today reported. A mob attacked the Udayagiri Police station, demanding the accused behind the social media post be handed over to them. When the mob turned violent, police resorted to lathi charges and arrested some of them, police claimed.
