BBC documentary on PM Modi screened at Hyderabad University: report

Hyderabad: More than 50 students of Hyderabad Central University (HCU) reportedly participated in the screening of the BBC documentary ‘India: The Modi Question’ inside the campus on Monday.

Student Islamic Organisation (SIO) and Muslim Student Federation known as the Fraternity group organized the screening of the controversial documentary which India termed as 'propaganda piece', according to NDTV.

Seeking action against the organisers, rightwing student outfit ABVP’s leader Mahesh said the groups involved in screening the documentary inside the campus did so without permission.

Mahesh added that the screening was brought to the attention of the University authorities and demanded action against the organisers.

Police said they were alerted about some students holding the screening of the documentary inside the campus but no written complaint has been lodged yet, adding that investigation will begin upon receiving the complaint.

Earlier today, reports said the Jawaharlal Nehru University administration barred the JNU students’ union from screening the BBC documentary on campus.

The direction from the university comes after the JNUSU released a pamphlet inviting students to the screening of the documentary at 9 pm at the union’s office today.

JNU administration, alongside citing that no prior permission was taken for screening, said that it would disturb peace and harmony of the campus.

India denounced the controversial BBC documentary, examining Prime Minister Modi’s leadership during the 2002 Gujarat riots, saying the documentary was designed to push a discredited narrative.
