Barpeta: An Assam court has reserved its order on Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani's bail plea on Thursday on a case, which charged him with attacking a policewoman while he was transferred to Kokrajhar from Guwahati, PTI reported.

Mevani's advocate Angshuman Bora told PTI that they placed their arguments before the court. Thought he prosecution side sought an adjournment, the court declined and ordered them to submit their argument on Thursday itself.

After Congress, to whom Mevani gave his support from outside, held a protest march in Assam and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) chief got detained along with others.

Mevani was arrested last week for his Twitter post in which he claimed Narendra Modi considered Naduram Godse as God. He had urged Modi to appeal for communal harmony in Gujarat in the same position as the FIR against him at Kokrajhar Police Station states.

He was rearrested hours after he got bail in the Twitter post case, this time for an alleged assault on a policewoman.

Barpeta Superintendent of Police Amitava Sinha told PTI that the APCC president and those who accompanied him in his protests were detained for conducting demonstrations without acquiring permission. APCC president Bhupen Kumar Borah had led a silent march here and took out a procession through the streets of the town to the party office. Sinha added that there was a CrPC section 144 was placed in the district.

Meanwhile, Borah questioned the complaint that accused Mevani of attacking the policewoman. "How is it possible to molest a woman official when other officers were present and that too inside a police vehicle?" he asked.
