The deceased has been identified as Jalil Rahman, a resident of Gilatali. The incident took place on Thursday morning while Rahman was returning home from Bagbar with two cows that he had purchased with his own money.
According to the police, a group of people attacked Rahman at around 4.45am while he was making his way home with the cattle. Police said the attackers may have assaulted him after suspecting that he had arrived to steal cattle. The identities of those involved in the attack are not yet known.
"We suspect that the mob surrounded and attacked Rahman after mistaking him for someone who had come to transport stolen cattle. He had actually purchased the two cows with his own money and was returning home with them at around 4.30am when the attack took place," said Ashish Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Kalyanpur police station.
