Nicole Kidman, who recently won Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for her role in Babygirl, had to abruptly leave the event following the death of her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman.

Kidman’s absence at the ceremony was felt as director Halina Reijn accepted the award on her behalf and read a heartfelt message from the actress.

In a video shared by Deadline, Reijn conveyed Kidman's emotional statement: “I arrived in Venice today to the news that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, has just passed. I am in shock, but I need to be with my family. This award is for her.”

The actress went on to express her deep connection to her mother, saying, "She shaped me, she guided me, and she made me. The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken."

Reijn concluded the speech by sending love to Kidman on behalf of the Babygirl team, stating, “We love you, Nicole.”

Nicole Kidman had previously spoken about her mother's declining health during an interview in January 2022, but she had not disclosed further details. At the time, she shared how she had been caring for her mother in Australia, making special memories together, including a private visit to a Matisse exhibit that held sentimental value given her mother’s love for the arts.

Kidman's latest series, The Perfect Couple, premiered on Netflix on September 5, featuring co-stars Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Billy Howle, and Ishaan Khatter.
