Japanese animation director Hayato Date, best known for directing Naruto and Naruto Shippuden, will visit India for the first time during Anime India 2026, scheduled to be held at the NESCO Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, Mumbai, from August 28 to 30.

During the three-day event, Date will participate in stage appearances, question-and-answer sessions, and special meet-and-greet events with fans. Organisers said the filmmaker is looking forward to meeting the Indian anime community and witnessing its growing enthusiasm for Japanese animation.

Thousands of fans from across the country are expected to attend the convention, making it one of India's largest anime gatherings.

Date is widely recognised for directing Naruto and its sequel Naruto Shippuden, adapted from Masashi Kishimoto's bestselling manga series. His work played a major role in establishing the franchise's global popularity.

Organisers said the visit reflects the rapid growth of anime culture in India, driven by streaming platforms, theatrical releases and fan conventions. They believe hosting internationally renowned creators such as Date will further strengthen India's position as a destination for anime events.

In addition to appearances by special guests, Anime India 2026 will feature cosplay competitions, gaming events, merchandise stalls, artist booths and other activities celebrating Japanese pop culture.
