Veteran actor Mohanlal, who recently stepped down as President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), has spoken for the first time about the Hema Committee report since its release on August 19.

At a press event in Kochi, he addressed the report and clarified the reasons behind his resignation, dismissing rumors that he was avoiding his responsibilities.

Mohanlal defended the role of AMMA, stating, "AMMA is not a trade union. It operates like a family. It's unfortunate that the association is facing such intense scrutiny." He emphasized that the Malayalam film industry is in a stronger position compared to other regional industries, adding, "Our industry is in a better state than others."

The 64-year-old actor revealed that he had provided his statement to the Hema Committee in his capacities as both an actor and a producer. "I welcome the committee's observations," Mohanlal said.

"The perpetrators should be brought to justice, which is the responsibility of the police. We will fully cooperate... Other industries should also consider having a similar report. Let this be a significant turning point for the film industry, starting with Malayalam cinema."

Mohanlal highlighted the ongoing growth and international recognition of Malayalam cinema, urging the media to avoid causing unintentional harm to the industry in light of the committee's findings. He called for a balanced approach to ensure that the industry's progress continues.

Regarding his silence over the past week amid discussions about sexual harassment, Mohanlal explained that he was occupied with post-production work on his directorial debut, "Barroz," and attending to his wife’s surgery. He sidestepped questions about the specific allegations made by Malayalam actors, insisting that he is not part of any power group.

This marks the first time Mohanlal has spoken to the media following the release of the Hema Committee report and his resignation from AMMA. Several other executive committee members have also resigned from their positions after allegations of sexual misconduct were made against some of the association's members.

Reports suggest that AMMA had planned an executive committee meeting to address the sexual abuse allegations against its members and to identify a suitable replacement for actor Siddique as joint secretary, following a sexual assault case filed against him by an actress who claimed he assaulted her in 2016.

However, the committee faced further challenges after joint secretary Baburaj was also accused of sexual abuse.

Actresses have also named actors Mukesh, Jayasurya, Edavela Babu, Maniyanpilla Raju, and others in sexual harassment allegations.

The Hema Committee report, made public on August 19, was originally submitted to the Kerala government five years ago, following the alleged abduction and sexual assault of a leading Malayalam actress in a moving car while she was traveling from Kochi to Thrissur. Actor Dileep and 12 others were arrested in connection with the case.
