Legendary Tamil filmmaker and actor K Bhagyaraj dies at 73
text_fieldsChennai: Veteran Tamil film director, screenwriter and actor K Bhagyaraj passed away on Saturday after suffering a major cardiac arrest. He was 73.
Considered one of the finest screenplay writers and filmmakers in Indian cinema, Bhagyaraj’s death has left the Tamil film industry in shock. He is survived by his wife Poornima Bhagyaraj, son Shanthnu Bhagyaraj and daughter Saranya Bhagyaraj.
Sources close to the actor said that Bhagyaraj complained of chest pain early on Saturday morning and was rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The news of his demise comes just 17 days after the passing of his mentor and fellow Tamil cinema icon K Bharathirajaa, adding to the grief in the film fraternity.
Actors, directors, producers and film personalities from across the country expressed their condolences and remembered Bhagyaraj’s contribution to Indian cinema.
Telugu actor Venkatesh was among the first to pay tribute, recalling his association with Bhagyaraj through films such as 'Sundarakanda' and 'Abbaigaru'. He said the filmmaker’s storytelling had crossed language barriers and touched millions of hearts.
Tamil director M Rajesh also mourned his death, describing Bhagyaraj’s storytelling, humour and screenplays as an inspiration for generations of writers and filmmakers.
Born in Tamil Nadu on January 7, 1953, Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj worked in more than 75 films as a writer, director and actor. Known for his unique storytelling style and sharp humour, he often used entertainment to highlight social issues.
Several of his films, including 'Andha 7 Naatkal', 'Mundhaanai Mudichu', 'Thooral Ninnu Pochu', Darling Darling Darling', 'Idhu Namma Aalu', 'Indru Poi Naalai Vaa', 'Mouna Geethangal' and 'Rudra', became major successes.
Many of his films were later remade or dubbed in Hindi, Kannada, Telugu and Odia. 'Andha 7 Naatkal' was remade in Hindi as 'Woh Saat Din'.
Apart from directing and acting, Bhagyaraj was also known for his writing skills. He penned the story of 'Oru Kaidhiyin Diary', directed by Bharathirajaa and starring Kamal Haasan. The film was later remade in Hindi as 'Aakhree Rasta', featuring Amitabh Bachchan and directed by Bhagyaraj himself.
The veteran filmmaker’s legacy continues through his memorable films and the many filmmakers he influenced.
