Kerala feminist lawyers group offers legal support to survivor actors of harassment
cancel

In response to the Hema Committee report exposing incidents of sexual harassment within the Malayalam film industry, a collective of feminist lawyers in Kerala has extended their support to survivors. The report, released last week, prompted the Kerala government to pledge legal action against the accused, contingent on survivors registering formal complaints.

The collective aims to assist women in navigating the legal process, addressing their concerns and providing reassurance regarding the confidentiality of their identities. Comprised of around 20 women lawyers and activists from across the state, the group is dedicated to offering both legal guidance and emotional support at no cost.

The Hema Committee report has already led to significant changes within the industry, including the resignation of prominent figures such as senior actor Siddique from the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists and renowned filmmaker Ranjith from the Kerala Chalachitra Academy. Despite these developments, no formal complaints have yet been filed by the women who have come forward with their experiences of harassment.

The lawyers' collective encourages survivors to reach out for assistance, emphasising the importance of taking action against harassment and ensuring that women feel empowered to seek justice. Their commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment aims to alleviate the fear and confusion that often prevent survivors from coming forward.
