Greta Gerwig's Barbie trailer out, the plot promises real-world connections
text_fieldsLos Angeles: One of the most awaited films of the year, Barbie 2023, has released its trailer. The Greta Gerwig directorial turns out to be a world full of colour but linked to the real world.
The film is inspired by the Mattel line of dolls launched in 1059. Fans have been excited about Gerwig's take on the iconic yet very commercial concept of dolls. She is known to be one of the most refreshing voices of the century.
In the trailer, audiences are introduced to the colourful Barbie Land where Barbie, played by Margot Robbie and Ken, played by Ryan Gosling, are dancing and living their best lives with their friends. It always looks like a party and everything is happy. It all changes when Barbie, amid a fun dance session asks her friends: "Do you guys ever think about dying". Then, unusual things start happening to Barbie. Her feet fully touch the ground instead of having her heels arched and raised in the air.
When she approaches another older Barbie for a solution, she is asked to venture into the real world to find the truth. It is not her first choice but she is forced to choose walking-friendly shoes.
However, Ken decides to accompany her and kickstarts the soul-searching journey where they are practically aliens. After Barbie punches a guy for groping her, the duo ends up in jail. A series of comedic adventures are shown but the big corporation is not happy that their dolls have entered the real world.
The trailer reads: "If you love Barbie, this movie is for you. If you hate Barbie, this movie is for you." The film's aesthetics have already made an impact in mid-2022 and kickstarted the Barbiecore trend.
Speaking to Variety about the film, Greta said she is both excited and terrified because it can be a "career-ender". "It was terrifying. There’s something about starting from that place where it’s like ‘Well, anything is possible.’ It felt like vertigo starting to write it. Like, where do you even begin? What would be the story? That feeling that I had was knowing that it would be really interesting terror. Usually, that’s where the best stuff is. I am terrified of that. Anything where you’re like, ‘This could be a career-ender,’ then you’re like, OK, I probably should do it."
The movie will be released in theatres on July 1, 2023.
It also stars Simu Liu, Alexandra Shipp, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Hari Nef, Scot Evans, Kate McKinnon, and Issa Rae.
