After two weeks in theatres, Avatar: The Way of Water's ticket sales have reached $1 billion globally, according to Walt Disney Co.

The film outperformed the only other 2022 films to sell $1 billion in tickets, Top Gun: Maverick from Paramount Global and Jurassic World: Dominion from Comcast Corp.'s Universal.

According to a statement released by Disney on Wednesday, it's the quickest a movie has made that much money since Spider-Man: No Way Home a year ago.

One of the most expensive films ever produced, The Way of Water will probably need to maintain a brisk sales pace in order to break even. According to director James Cameron, it needs to sell $2 billion worth of tickets to break even. At the international box office, the first Avatar brought in close to $3 billion.

According to Disney, the sequel's sales in the US and Canada had surpassed $300 million. The Burbank, California-based firm announced earlier this week that the movie had sold $95.5 million worth of tickets in those markets alone during the long weekend, considerably surpassing forecasts given that theatres in certain areas had been closed due to blizzards.

The movie centres on the native Na'vi humanoids who live on the moon Pandora and the colonisation that threatens them. It is recommended by about 78% of critics, according to the review website RottenTomatoes.com.
