Cannes: Hollywood veteran star Robert De Niro, a long-time cast of many Martin Scorsese movies, took a jab at Donald Trump while talking about his new film with Scorsese that premiered at Cannes, Agence France-Presse reported.

De Niro, the 79-year-old legendary actor and Academy Award winner, said on Sunday that his character in the film "Killers of the Flower Moon", which premiered at the fest, embodied an evil as same as Trump, the ex-US president.

Cannes premiered the movie on Saturday before a hungrily awaiting Scorsese fan crowd.

AFP reports that De Niro dons a real-life dignitary from 1920s rural America named William Hale. Hale made a trust with local Osage Indians and orchestrated scores of murders to steal their oil-rich lands.

Niro told reporters that he doesn't understand much about him or why he betrayed them.

AFP quoted Niro, "But we became a lot more aware after the murder of George Floyd with systemic racism, and that's what this is." He was referring to the horrible killing of a man of colour, which sparked the Black Lives Matter protests.

De Niro said that the banality of evil is what the world must watch out for. "We all know who I'm going to talk about -- I won't say his name," he said.

He said moments later, "It's like with Trump -- I had to say it. There are people who think he could do a good job. Imagine how insane that is." AFP reports.
